Mogadishu, Somalia โ February 13, 2025. Today marks two significant milestones in the media landscape: the anniversary of the establishment of the Somali Media Association (SOMA) and World Radio Day. SOMA represents all Somali radio stations, except for those in Somaliland. The Somali Media Association (SOMA) is an independent, non-profit, and non-political media organization established by a group of media managers from Somalia.
The organization was founded in Kampala on 13th February 2013 in a meeting held by 13 radio institutions from Somalia. SOMA now has a membership of 47 media institutions that are interlinked through common interests and objectives.
World Radio Day, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011, serves as a global reminder of radioโs critical role in fostering dialogue, and public awareness. The Secretary-General of SOMA highlighted the enduring impact of radio, describing it as the most accessible and reliable source of information for people across Somalia, regardless of their social or economic status.
โRadio remains the first and most inclusive form of media, reaching communities in urban centers, and rural areas, where internet access is limited. Despite the rise of digital media, radio continues to be a lifeline for millions who depend on it for news, and public service announcements,โ stated the Secretary-General.
He urged Somali media outlets, particularly SOMA members, to adopt modern digital technologies while maintaining radio as a key communication tool. By integrating digital platforms with radio broadcasting.
On this special occasion, the Secretary-General extended his heartfelt congratulations to all Somali media professionals, particularly SOMA members, on the associationโs 12th anniversary and World Radio Day. He encouraged them to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity and professionalism, ensuring that radio remains a trusted and essential medium for the Somaliย people.
