Somali Media Representative Participates in International Discussions on Digital Media and Regional Security in Istanbul and Benghazi
Benghazi, Libya | 5 November 2026
Mohamed Abduwahab Abdullahi Ahmed, Secretary General of the Somali Media Association (SOMA) and Founder and Director of Risaala Media Corporation, has participated in two international conferences held in Istanbul, Türkiye, and Benghazi, Libya, representing Somalia and contributing to discussions on the evolving role of media in addressing contemporary challenges.
The first event was the Al-Mashreq Media Conference, held in Istanbul on 31 October and 1 November 2026. He participated in a panel discussion focusing on digital media, digital transformation, and the changing landscape of journalism and institutional communication.
The discussions explored the opportunities and challenges created by digital technologies, the growing influence of digital platforms and artificial intelligence, and the need for media institutions to adapt to the rapidly changing information environment.
During the discussion, he shared perspectives from the Somali media experience, highlighting the development of digital journalism in Somalia, the challenges facing media institutions, and the importance of strengthening professional standards, media independence, and the responsible use of digital platforms.
The second event was the International Partnership Conference on Combating Terrorism and Reducing Irregular Migration, held in Benghazi, Libya. The conference brought together representatives, experts, and stakeholders to discuss regional and international cooperation in addressing terrorism, irregular migration, and related security and humanitarian challenges.
His participation provided an opportunity to emphasize the importance of professional and responsible journalism, accurate information, and the media’s role in explaining the root causes of irregular migration and promoting balanced public discourse.
Reflecting on his participation, Mohamed Abduwahab emphasized that international conferences provide valuable opportunities for Somalia to strengthen its engagement with regional and international institutions, exchange experiences, build professional networks, and ensure that the realities and priorities of Somali society are represented in international discussions.
He also highlighted the essential role of Somali media in promoting peace, accountability, public awareness, social cohesion, and democratic governance. However, journalists and media institutions in Somalia continue to face significant challenges, including insecurity, economic constraints, misinformation, and restrictions on press freedom.
Addressing these challenges requires stronger institutional support, professional development, protection of media independence, and constructive engagement between media institutions and public authorities.
“Representing Somalia and its media sector at international platforms is both a national responsibility and a valuable opportunity. It enables us to share our experiences, learn from others, and ensure that the voices and priorities of Somali journalists and media institutions are heard in international discussions,” he said.
His participation in the two conferences reflects the importance of international engagement in strengthening Somali media, promoting professional journalism, defending freedom of expression, and expanding cooperation with regional and international media stakeholders.
