Mogadishu, Wednesday 15 August, 2018: the Somali Media Association (SOMA) has concluded the second day its two-day General Assembly Meeting that has been conducted at Makka Almukarama Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia.
The SOMA GA meeting participated by SOMA members of media owners , directors and other key invited guests from IMS/FOJO, Ministry of Information, SOSCENSA , faculty of journalism of the Somali National University, SWJ, SIMHA and NUSOJ were the main participants of today’s meeting.
The main key agenda for the meeting included: presentation of the Safety Protocol, launching and signing the official Somali Media Safety Protocol, approval of draft financial policy and procedure manual, presentation of the last two years financial statement, election of new SOMA governing team and distribution of SOMA membership certificates.
In his opening speech, Mohamed Osman Makaran, the Chairman of SOMA mentioned key issues for the second day meeting include the launching and signing the Somalia Safety Protocol and electing new leadership for SOMA.
Furthermore, the meeting has approved the financial policy and procedure manual and conduced presentation of the last two years financial statement for SOMA members for their necessary updating and reporting.
Thereafter, a session for fair process of electing new SOMA governing team for the next three years has been conducted.
As result, Mohamed Osman Makaran, Director of Radio Hiran has been elected as Chairman, Ahmed Aidid Diriye, Director of Radio Sooyaal in Kismayo as Deputy Chairman and Mohamed Abduwahab Abdulahi , Director of Radio Risaala, Mogadishu as the Secretary General.
Also, a new six – member Executive Committee has been elected from various regional areas including Puntland, Galmudug, South West and Mogadishu, Banadir region
Representatives from IMS/FOJO, Radio Ergo, SOSCENSA, SWJ, SIMHA, NUSOJ and media outlets have been key observers of the free and fair election process for the new leaders of SOMA.
The meeting has been concluded with distribution of SOMA membership certificates as appreciation for their efforts towards improving the Somali media houses and journalist.
