SOMA Successfully Convenes Its General Assembly Meeting In partnership with IMS/SIDA Sweden, the Somali Media Association (SOMA) effectively conducted a one-day General Assembly meeting on November 3, 2024, at the Sahafi Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, reinforcing its dedication to enhancing the media landscape in the country.
This seventh assembly brought together 32 member media centers, facilitating collaboration among key stakeholders, including media owners and directors from diverse regions such as Afgoye, Bosaso, Barawa, Bardhere, Beledweyne, Balad, Baidoa, Dhuusamareeb, Garowe, Jowhar, Kismayo, and Wanla-Weyn, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in shaping the future of Somali media.
The meeting served as a vital platform to assess achievements, tackle challenges, explore content-sharing initiatives, and promote gender inclusivity, thereby ensuring a broader range of perspectives within the media.
Mohamed Osman Makaran, the outgoing Secretary General, outlined 37 program activities that were instrumental during his tenure, including training sessions and advocacy campaigns, while highlighting the essential support from the association’s leadership and members.
The agenda focused on critical issues such as the SOMA Advocacy Strategy, the safety of media personnel, the promotion of press freedom, and the protection of freedom of expression.
Furthermore, the assembly welcomed four new media houses, enhancing the diversity and strength of the association: –
1- Radio Galdogob, Mudug Region
2- Radio Bay iyo Bakool, Baidoa City, South West State
3- Radio Bahdo, Galmudug State
4- Radio Dhambaal, Adado City, Galmudug State
A transparent election process resulted in the appointment of Hilal Sheikh Shuceyb as Chairman, Ahmed Omar Salihi as Deputy Chairman, and Mohamed Abdiwahab as Secretary General for the next three years.
In his acceptance speech, Abdiwahab expressed gratitude to the members for their trust and reiterated his commitment to advancing SOMA and supporting Somali journalists in their vital roles. With the conclusion of the meeting, SOMA is well-positioned to address upcoming challenges and advance the progress of the Somali media landscape, fostering a constructive environment that encourages collaboration and innovation among all stakeholders.
At that stage, the SOMA GA has been concluded.
